A clown, a peasant of the lower class, a
young man, a feUow, a sturdy fellow, a
lad. Balach na h-aimhreite, a name given
lo a quarrelsome fellow.
BALACHAIL, adj. Clownish; boyish,
puerile; vulgar, clumsy, ungainly.
BALACHAN, -ain, -an, s. m. (dim. of
Balach) A boy, a young boy, a little boy.

BAL A GAM, -aim, s. to. A moutliful; a
sip, a gulp of any liquid.
BALAOCH, -oicH, s. in. (i. c. bà-laoch, a
cow-herd.) A boy, lad, clown. Vide Bal-
ach and Balachan.
BALBH, adj. BAILBHE. Dumb, mute,
silent, quiet, at peace.
BALBH ACHD, s. /. ind. Dumbness,
muteness, silence. Marbh bhalbhachd na
h-oidhche, the dead silence of night.
BALBH AG, -aig, -an, s.f. a pebble, a
small stone.
BALBHAN, -ain, -an, s. m. A dumb
person.
BALBHAN ACHD, s.f. Dumbness, mute-
ness, dumb show.
BALC, -AiLC, s.f. A balk; a boundary;
a ridge of earth between two furrows ; also
the crusty surface of the earth occasioned
by long heat.

BALG, BUILG, s. to. A leather bag, a
budget, a wallet, scrip, satchel ; belly ;
the womb ; ablister on the skin. Vide Bolg.
BALG, or Bolg is an ancient Celtic vocable,
and in every language where it is used,
has the same signification as in Gaelic.
The ancient Gauls and Britons used it to
denote a wallet, quiver, &c. &c.

BALGACH, -AICHE, adj. Full of bags;
like a bag, like a wallet ; bellied.
BALGAICH, V. a. Belly out, as a sail;
stow in a bag or satchel.

contempt, a cunning fellow ; a dog ; au
impudent person.

ning, craftiness.
BALG AIREAN, n. pl. of Balgair. Foxes.
BALGAN, -AIN, dim. of Balg. A little
bag, &c.
BALGAN-SÈIDIDH, s. to. A small pair
of bellows.
BALGAN-BEICE, s. »«. A fuzz-ball, the
spongy mushroom.
BALGAN-SNÀMHA, s. to. The air blad-
der or bulb in fishes.

round, prominent eyes.
BALGUM, -uiM, -ANNAN, 5. m. A mouth-
ful of any liquid. Vide Balagam.

BALL, g(?/i. BUILL, s. to. A member, a
limb, a member of society ; an instrument,
tool or implement ; a ball, a foot-ball ; a
spot, a plat of ground, a j>lace ; a cable ;
the male instrument of generation ; any
part of male or female dress, &c. " Ball-
bùirte," A butt, an object of derision. " Ball
cluaise," A sheet rope, fore-sheet. " Ball
coise," afoot-ball. "Balldeise," "Ball-fear-
ais," membrum virile. " Ball-dòbhrain,"
a mole on the skin. " Ball fanaid," a laugh-
ing or mocking stock. " Ball-seirc," a
beauty spot. " Ball-sgòid," a sheet- rope.
" Ball-sinnsireachd," any old article of
family furniture ; heir-loom. " Ball airm,"
a iveapon, &c. &c. This old Celtic word
is to be met with in many tongues, signi-
fying, generally, a globular body.
BALLA, pl. ACHAN, s. to. A wall, a
bulwark. See Balladh.
BALLA-BACAIDH, s. to. A wall of de-
fence ; a bulwark.
BALL-ÀBHACHAIS, s. m. A gazing
stock ; a laughing stock.
