| Description | Sheet 35 of the Ordnance Survey One-inch Popular Edition of Scotland. It was issued in 1929 at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1: 63,360) from a survey done in 1927. The first Ordnance Survey of this area was done between 1872 and 1875. The Sound of Sleat is a channel that separates the south-east shore of the Isle of Skye from the west coast mainland districts of Knoydart and Morar. At the right (east) side, the sheet shows these areas of coast from Loch Carron in the north to Loch Morar in the south, taking in Loch Alsh, Loch Hourn, the Moydart Peninsula, Loch Nevis and North Morar. Left, across the Sound of Sleat, the most south-easterly peninsula of the Isle of Skye is in the centre of the sheet, stretching north and west into the top left corner. Just above the central peninsula is the Isle of Scalpay, and the southern tip of the Isle of Raasay further to the west. A tiny tip of the Isle of Eigg is visible in the bottom left (south west) corner. On the right, the sheet stretches from Loch Carron in the north, to part of the Loch Morar just off Sron a Drutain, in the south. On the left, the sheet stretches from Beinn nan Capull (871 feet), on the Isle of Skye, in the north, to Sgor Sgaileach, on the northern tip of the Isle of Eigg, in the south. There are two sets of References, the scale statement ‘One Inch to One Statute Mile - 1/63360’, with accompanying scale bar, and two further scale bars of 1 centimetre to 1000 yards and 1 centimetre to 1 kilometre. Contours and fathoms are shown, with accompanying information about measurement. |

The ‘Popular’ edition was particularly intended for the inter-war generation's leisure hours – cycling, touring or walking through the countryside. |
