Egyptian war of 1882 in command of the Siege Train (mentioned in despatches, Medal, 3rd Class of the Medjidie*
and Khedive's Star).
261 Major General H. F. W. Ely served with the 99th Regiment throughout the campaign of i860 in China, including
the actions of Chankinwan and Paliatchow and surrender of Pekin (Medal with Clasp) . Served throughout the Zulu
war of 1879. Commanded a large convoy of ammunition and provisions following Pearson's Column in the advance
on Ekowe, and was present during the investment of that place by the enemy. Was afterwards Commandant of
one of the forts on the coast line of communication (Medal with Clasp) .
262 Major General A. L. Emerson served in the Crimea in 1835-56 after the fall of Sebastopol, but previous to the
conclusion of the armistice and until the evacuation of the Crimea by the Allies.
263 Major General J. Emerson served throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Mood-
kee, Ferozeshah, and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps).
264 Major General F. Eteson served with the iSth Royal Irish throughout the Burmese war in 1852-53, including the
capture of Martaban, Rangoon, Prome, and the Donabew stockades (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
2S5 Major General A. T. Etheridge commanded detachments of the 23rd Bombay N.I. on service in the Concan
and Khandeish in 1844-45 ; served in the Mahee Kanta with the Guicowar's Horse in 1848, and present at the sur-
render of the fort of Ahmednuggur ; present at the operations against the Dessaiees of Warree in the North Canara
and Bedee districts, and commanded a body of Irregulars in the movement against their position on 25th February
1858 (Medal).
267 Major General E. D.Fairtlough served in the Crimean campaign from 19th Jan. to 24th May 1855, as Adjutant
of the 14th Regiment, including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also in New
Zealand during the war in 1863-66 (Medal).
268 Major General A. V. Falls served in the Southern Mahratta campaign of 1844-45, including the sieges of
Punella, Pownghur, Munoher, and Munsuntosh, and capitulation of Budderghur.
269 Major General W. T. F. Farewell was employed on field service in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, in
the suppression of the Indian mutiny, from 6th February 1858 ; present at the affair of Kabraie 17th April, battle
Of Banda. 19th April 1858, and surrender of the rebel Narrain Rao, and occupation of Kirwee on 6th June 1858
(Medal with Clasp for Central India).
271 Major General G. McB. B. Farquharson served in Sind in 1843, and with the field detachment which attacked
and defeated Meer Shah Mahomed at Peer Arree on the 8th June 1843. Served with the Persian Expeditionary
Force in 1856-57, and was present at the landing at Hallilah Bay, storm and capture of Reshire, and surrender of
Bushire (Medal with Clasp).
274 Major General R. F. Firth served in the China war in 1858-59 (Medal).
275 Major General C. FitzGerald served with the 49th Regiment in the Crimea from the 14th Nov. 1S54, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol, capture of the Quarries with the storming party, and assaults of the Redan on the
18th June and 8th September (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
276 Major General M. M. FitzGerald served with the expeditions under Sir Neville Chamberlain in Meeranzye and
Upper Koorum in 1S56, and against the Bozdar Belochees in March 1857 (Medal with Clasp). Also at the siege and
capture of Delhi, and with the Field Force under General Showers in various minor operations in 1857-58 (Medal
with Clasp).
277 Major General R. FitzGerald was present with the 69th Regiment during the repulse of an incursion of
Fenians into Canada in May 1870.
27S Major General A. FitzHugh commanded a detachment of the 4th Sikh Infantry in three affairs against the
Momunds near Fort Shubkudr in December 1863 and January 1864 (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
Commanded the 4th Sikh Infantry in the expedition to the Dour Valley in Feb. 1872 (mentioned in despatches).
Commanded the 4th Punjab Infantry throughout the Jowaki campaign of 1877-78 (mentioned in despatches, Clasp).
Commanded the 5th Goorkhas throughout the Afghan war of 1878-80 ; was in command of the advance party in the
attack on the Spingawi Kotal on 2nd December 1879, and of the Regiment as rearguard on 13th December in the
Sapri Pass (mentioned in despatches) ; was present in the engagement at Charasiah and in the operations around
Cabul in December 1879— wounded (several times mentioned in despatches); accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts u>
the march to Candahar, and was present at the battle of Candahar (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel,
CB., Medal with four Clasps, and Bronze Decoration).
279 Major General H. T. FitzHugh served in the Crimean campaign from May 1855, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol, in the trenches with the siege train, and at the bombardments of 6th and 17th June (Brevet of
Major, Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie. and Turkish Medal).
260 Major General H. C. Fletcher was present during part of the Kolapore campaign in 1845.
281 Major General W. K. Fooks served in the Sutlej campaign in 1846, including the battle of Sobraon (Medal),
Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the siege of Mooltan and battle of Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps) .
282 Major General W. O. Foord was employed with a field force from 5th March 1858, and engaged with a small
party ol the rebels on the 2nd October 1858 (Medal).
234 Major General Foote served on the China expedition of 1857-58, including the blockade of the Canton River, and
was Major of the Provisional Battalion at the landing before and storming of Canton; commanded the Royal Marines
at the assault and capture of the walled townof Namtow — mentioned in despatches (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
285 Major General C. P. Forbes served with the expedition from Aden against the Foodhli Arab tribe in 1866,
including the destruction of Shugra.
288 Major General Barnett Ford served with the Madras Sappers and Miners throughout the Burmese war of 1852-
53, and also as an Assistant Field Engineer to the Army of Ava during the greater part of the war. Commanded
two Companies of Sappers and Miners at the capture of Martaban (thanked oy the Government of India) ; present
at the destruction of the river stockades, the taking of the White House Piquet, storm of the Great Pagoda, capture
of Rangoon, nth and 15th April (slightly wounded) ; commanded a detachment of Sappers in the storm of the Fort
and capture of Bassein (thanked by the Government of India), and present in various minor affairs (Medal with
Clasp for Pegu) .
289 Major General J. G. R. Forlong served in the Burmese campaign in 1852-53 ; was employed as an Assistant
Field Engineer and in charge of guides and a survey with a large armed force to escort elephants from Arracan to
Pegu in 1853, and present at the attack and investment of Prome, capture of Toma, and sundry skirmishes there,
and in pursuit of the Burman Governor of Padore (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
290 Major General T. F. Forster served as a volunteer in the Sutlej campaign in 1846, and was present at the battle
of Aliwal (Medal).
29l Major General A. G. Forsyth served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the action of Sadoola-
pore (Medal). Served also in the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857-59, including the action near Agra on the 5th
July battle of Agra on the 10th Oct. 1857, and action of Dowra (Medal).
294 Major General C. S. Fowle served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 (Medal) .
301 Major General A. R. Fraser was on field service in the Southern Mahratta Country during part of 1845.
306 Major General William French served with the expedition to China in i860, and was present at Sinho,
Tangku, capture of Taku Forts, and surrender of Pekin (Medal with two Clasps). Also during the operations
against the Taepings in the vicinity of Shanghai in May and October 1862, including the capture of the walled
cities of Tsinpoo and Tsolin, the fortified city of Najow, the affair at Nanksiang, and recapture of the walled city
of Kahding. Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, took part in the defence of Candahar (mentioned in despatches),
and was present at the battle of Candahar (Medal with Clasp).
307 Major General D. Gaye served in Scinde in 1843 in command of two guns with the Detachment which, in
the night attack on the British Camp near Shahdadpore, defeated and dispersed the Forces of Meer Shah Mahomed,
taking all his cannon.
308 Major General H. H. F. Gifford served in the Afghan war in 1878-79, and was present in the advance to
Candahar and Khelat-i-Ghilzie under Sir Donald Stewart (Brevet of Major, and Medal).
309 Major General E. M. Gilbert-Cooper served in the Indian Mutiny campaign, and was present at the'assault and
capture of Kotah, pursuit of the rebels under Tantia Topee, the Rao Saheb, and the Nawab of Banda in June
July and August 1S58 ; at the action of Sanganeer and the battle of the Bunass ; with Brigadier Parke's pursuing
Column from August to November 1858 (Medal with Clasp).
