178 GREENOCK CRICKET CLUB, SEASON 1927
GREENOCK v. WEST OF SCOTLAND at Whitehaugh,
Paisley (Final of the Rowan Charity Cup)

August 16th,
1927.
Extract from
Greenock Telegraph
of August 17th, 1927.
" With 100 on the board W. Carnie and W. A. B. Smith were
making desperate efforts, and after the latter was dismissed and
G. H. Tough went to the wicket the same tactics were followed.
The crowd was breathless as short hits were run for. When the
score had reached 114 there was a 3 bye which made it necessary
to get 3 to win. It was the last over, and there only remained
two balls of it. Carnie hit the first of these for a 2. He skied
the ball and the fielder made an effort to catch it but missed.
Then one ball to go and one run to make for victory ! Carnie
made no mistake, and he hit the ball back towards the bowler
about four yards—and both batsmen ran. The fielders were not
quick enough and all was over."
