Potted Golf.
of sand, and there is nothing high in
front to clear, you may take an iron
or a mashie, according to the distance
you want to get, and with a steady and
well-directed stroke you can lift the
ball cleanly. If the ball is in a sandy
hollow, entirely different tactics must
be pursued. The niblick is the only
club to use, and your object must be
to cause an eruption of the sand which
will vomit the ball forth. If you have
seen a tournament on any well-known
seaside course where there are huge
bunkers, as the Cardinal at Prestwick
and the Maiden at Sandwich, you will
know what I mean. You have seen
the player lunge at the sand with all
his might; there is a shower of sand,
momentarily obscuring him, and from
it emerges the ball. The stroke does
not always come off; in that self-
same Cardinal I saw James Braid drop
a couple of strokes the year he won
the Open Championship at Prestwick,
but in this case he was trying to reach
the green, whereas if he had played for
safety he would have got out at the
first time of asking.
