TheClubhavethereforesecuredtheservicesofEllis,whohas
playedonvariousoccasionsforLancashire,anditissincerelyhoped
hewillcomeuptoexpectationsandhelpthesidetowinthe
Championship.
WhileitcannotbecontendedthattheDunfermlineClubhave
hadmanyplayerswhocouldbeplacedinthehighestclasssofar
asScottishcricketisconcerned,itissafetosaythatthroughout
itslongandhonourableconnectionwiththegameithasalways
hadatitscommandplayerswellovertheaverage.Tonameonly
afewsincethepresentcenturycommenced:—Macgregor,Connel,
Smith,abeautifulbat,goodbowler,andbrilliantfield,andwho,
tomostpeople,gaveupthegameatamuchtooearlyage;Dick,
Forbes,Young,asplendidwicket-keeper,andPaton,whohadthe
honourtoplayforScotlandagainstIrelandin1914,readilyrecall
themselves.Itis,however,nodisparagementtoanyofthesetosay
thattwostandoutpre-eminently,namely,Dr.A.J.Macgregorand
MrD.Connel.Dr.MacgregorjoinedtheClubin1892,anduntiltwo
seasonsago,whenhefinallygaveupthegame,wasoneofthemost
prominentcricketersinScotland.In1913hewastheguestofthe
membersatadinnertomarkthecompletionof21years'continuous
serviceasaplayingmember,andwasmadetherecipientofasilver
rosebowlandsideornaments.Inpresentingthegifts,itwasstated
thatuptothattimehehadscorednearly7,000runsfortheClub,
andthatatanaverageofnearly20.Hehadhad28scoresof50and
over,hishighestbeing112againsttheGrangein1911.MrConnel
joinedtheClubin1905,andformanyseasonswasinvariablyatthe
headofthebattingaverages.Formanyyearshecaptainedthe
side,andnotafewofthematcheswerewonbyhisgeneralship,as
hewasthoroughlyversedinallpointsofthegame.Heplayedmany
biginningsforhisside,anditissincerelytobehopedthat,although
notnowplaying,hisinterestintheClub'swelfarewillalwaysbe
sustained.Sincethewartwoplayersstandoutfromtheothers:MrW.
Anderson,thepresentcaptainoftheside,andMrA.R.Simpson,and
bothhavehadthehonourofplayingfortheircountryonseveral
occasions.MrAnderson'srisehasbeenphenomenallyrapid,andall
