Inthesedaystherewerenofixturecards,andmatcheswere
arrangedbysimplyissuingachallengetootherClubs.1875sawthe
endofthis,andthedawnofthefixturecard.
In1870theCommittee,in.ordertoaugmenttheplayingmember-
shipoftheClub,reducedthemembershipfeeforapprentices,with
happyresults.MessrsD.Brown,J.Brown,A.R.Shearer,
J.Macpherson,W.Walls,andJ.Stewart,amongethers,joinedat
thistime,andhelpedtoputtheClubinasoundposition.
Theyear1875wasamemorableoneintheClub'shistory,inso
farthattheteamwentthroughtheentirelistofengagementswithout
losingasinglematch,playingtenmatchesandwinningthemall.
Office-bearersatthistimewereasfollows:—President,TheRightHon.
TheEarlofElgin;Captain;11'.Lamond;juice-Captain,G.
Macpherson;Treasurer,W.Walls:Secretaries,D.Speddingand
G.R.Anderson;Committee,D.Brown,J.Walls,andJ.Marshall.
Aftertheperformanceof1875,theClubnaturallycameinto
greaterprominence;and,inthehopeofkeepingintouchwithgood
Clubs,itwasdecidedtolookoutforanewground.TheCommittee
weresuccessfulinsecuringaleaseofLady'sMillParkParkfrom.
thelateMrJamesHuntof.Pittencrieff.Thenewgroundandpavilion
wereopenedin1879,withamatchagainsttheGrange,andwhich
resulted.inawinforthepremierClub.Thisevent,naturally,was
themeansofalaneinfluxofnewmembers,andthoseincluded
MessrsJ.Hay,A-Macpherson,G.Reid,J.F.Horn,andtheBruces.
Betweentheyears1885and1890theClubcamethroughthe
mosttrying.experienceofanalmostoverwhelmingexodusofplayers
fromthetown,suchprominentmembersasMessrsJ.Macpherson,
J.F.Horn,W.Reid,J.Neilson,A.Macpherson,Cxeo.Macpherson,
G.Erskine,andseveralothersallleavingfortheNewWorldtoseek
theirfortunes.Asamatteroffact,thisexodusoftheyoungmen
ofthetowntodistantlands,andespeciallytoAmerica,hasbeen
thegreatestdrawbacktheClubhashadtocontendwith.Inlater
yearssuchwell-knownplayersasL.Anderson,P.Robb,D.B.Taylor,
G.andR.Macpherson,A.Liddell,J.Simpson,W.Bonnar,andothers
leftjustwhentheywerereachingtheirbest,andwhentheClubmight
expecttobenefitbytheirexperience.Atvariousperiodsin.its
historyateamfromNewYorkanddistrictalonecouldhavebeen
selectedofDunfermline-trainedcricketerswhocouldhavegivenagood
accountofthemselvesinthebestofcompany.Itisonlyrighttosay
thatthesesamemembershavealwaysretainedawarmsidetotheold
Club,andevento-daymanyofthemforwardannuallytheir
subscriptions.
Everanxioustokeepthefieldintboroughorderandasup-to-date
aspossible,theCommitteefeltitwasnecessaryintheinterestsof
thegrowingmembershiptoextend-theoriginalPavilionandgenerally
