ForsomeyearsprevioustotheformationoftheForfar-
shireCricketClubitwasfeltthatuntilaproperorganisation
wasformedofcountycricketers,Dundeeatleastcouldnot
hopetocontendagainstclubswhohadalreadymadeaname
forthemsdves.Althoughmanygoodplayersweretobe
foundfollowingthegameweekbyweekinvariouscombina-
tions,noproperideacouldbeformulatedastotheirabilities
inhighercircles.
Thisstateofmattersmighthavecontinuedlongenough,
buttowardsthebeginningof1880,Mr.G.M.Cox,whowas
lookeduponastheleadingcricketerinthedistrict,andwho
hadtimeandagainassistedPerthshire,alongwithMr.W.N.
Machan,Mr.F.MaitlandDougall,Mr.J.L.Gordon,Mr.
C.E.Todd,Mr.A.Gordonsettowork,andbeforetheopening
ofseason1880,theForfarshireclubwasthoroughlysetagoing,
witlitheirheadquartersatForthill.TheClubenteredupon
theirfirstengagementagainstGlenalmondCollege,who
brouglitdowntwoliveprofessionalstoopposethenewly
constitutedclub,andforreferencesakewegivethenames
andscoresoftheplayerswhotookpartintheinitialgame.
