turningourattentiontothecricketsquareweechoedthe

wasdistinguishableonlybywashed-outcreasemarkings,
anditsfearsomeappearancestruckterrorintoourhearts.
Onthesoft,spongyturf,freelydecoratedwithmoss,no
twoballscamethesameway;onewouldbumpoverthe
batsman'shead,andthenextwouldbeamostaggressive
submarine.Thethirdmightcomealongmoreorless
truly,butthenextwouldgotosleepinthemossand
arrivewiththemilkinthemorning!
Nothingdaunted,weputinsomepractice,andthen
retiredtothehoteltorefreshtheinnerman.hollowing
theSkipper'sbadexample,wecarriedonthegoodwork
rathertoowell,andtheimportantbusinessoffixingup
billetswasnearlyoverlookedaltogether.
fortunately,wefellonourfeetrightaway,andinMr
andMrsWhitewefoundaworthycoupleafterourown
hearts.Theirhousewasimmediatelyplacedatourdis-
posal,and,inadditiontobedroomsfortheentirestaff,we
tookover(andfurnished)aMessroom,towhichthirsty
touristsmightretireforprayer-andmeditationatanyhour
ofthedayornight!Thisprovedtobeoneofthehappiest
movesofthewholetour,andonerecordswithfeelingsof
profoundadmirationthatnomatterhowlateornoisywere
theeveningsittings,ourgenialhostandhostessnever
madetheslightestcomplaint.
1'reshtumblerswerealwaysavailabletoreplace
casualties;allsignsofnightlyrevelryhadvanishedinto
thinairbymorning,andsowepursuedthe(un)eventenor
ofourway,undisturbedbyanyanddisturbingnone!
