Golfer,"wasaveryoldmemberwho,onaccountof
age,hadbeenplacedontheretiredlist.Helivednot
farfromthegreen,and,havinglittletodo,spentno
inconsiderablepartofhistimeinlookingafterthe
interestsoftheClub.Hewasausefulmaninmore
waysthanone.Tohim,alongwiththethreeoffice-
bearers,wasintrustedakeyofthepresswherethe
storeswerekept,fromwhichtheopencupboardwas
replenished.Itwasanunheard-ofeventforalloffice-
bearerstobeabsentonaSaturday,butoccasionally
someneedforthekeywouldoccurpriortotheir
arrival,andthenhiscameinhandy.Inthosedays,
itwasthecustomthatamember,ontheoccasionof
hismarriage,shouldpresenttheClubwithadozenof
champagne,whiletheappearanceofeachsonordaughter
thereafter,involvedafurthercontributionofhalfa
