ACommitteewasappointedin1811tolookafter
theSociety'sinterestsinconnectionwithaproposalto
makearacecourseontheMeadowsandBruntsfield
Links,butthisschemewasabandonedin1812.At
thatperiodaremitwasmadetotheSecretarytoobtain
fromtheTownCouncilrecords,orotherwise,acopy
oftheoriginalgrantoftheLinkstotheCityandin-
habitants;butneithertheoriginalgrantnoracopy
exists.TheLinks,whichformedpartoftheforeBurgh
Muir,havebelongedtotheCitybeforetheepochof
deeds.Inearlytimesallthegroundsouthwardofthe
Cowgatewascoveredbyadenselywoodedforestcalled
"DrumselchForest,"anditisunknownwhichking
grantedtheBurghMuirtotheCity,orwhenthegift
wasmade.ItisthoughtthatDavidI.mayhavedone
so,butthereisnoevidenceofthis.There,arelater
ChartersofConfirmationoftheGiftextant,notablythe
GoldenCharterbyJamesVI.in1603,preservedinthe
CitystrongroomattheMunicipalChambers.
AninterestingdisputewiththeMagistratescaused
someconsiderablestirintheSocietyin1843.This
wasnotthefirstfight,byanymeans,thattheBurgess
foughtindefenceoftheirgolfingrightsonBruntsfield.
SpeakingattheopeningoftheMusselburghClub-house
in1875,theCaptainstatedthattheBurgessClubhad
enjoyedtheprivilegeofgolfingoverBruntsfieldLinks
foralongperiod,exceptduringtheyear1843.In
pointoffact,thegamewasplayedinthatyearasusual.'
PrecedingtheactualdatewhentheBurgessfinally
lefttheiroldhomeatBruntsfieldin1877,atransitionary
statehadexisted.Themoreactivememberswhocould
nolongerbrooktheconfinedspacesincloseproximity
totheexpandingCityhadplayedforyearspreviously
