foundimpracticable.TheSociety,however,kepta
vigilanteyeontheLinksandwasinstrumentalinpro-
hibitingaprojectedracecourseontheMeadowsand
BruntsfieldLinks,theopeningofquarries,andof
makingnewpathwaysthroughtheLinks,thebeating
ofcarpets,thetrainingofhorses,theplayingofshinty,
theholdingofHallowFair,andthedrillingoftroops
—allofwhichweredetrimentaltotheexerciseofgolf.
DuringtheCovenantingperiod,theMagistrateshad
permittedthemusteroftroopsontheLinksasfarback,
atleast,as1644,whentheLairdofLawres'stroopof
horseswereallowedtomusterthereinorderthata
month'spaymightbedistributed.Thatwasnotthe
firstmusteroftroopsontheseancientLinks,asalarge
armyparadedtherepreparatorytotheadvanceinto
EnglandbyJamesIV.,whichendedsodisastrouslyfor
ScotlandatthebattleofFloddenin1513.Inatackof
theLinksin1723,rightwasreservedtopermittroops
tomusterthereon,butby1797tacksmenofpasturage
oftheLinksweredirectedtotakestepstoprevent
destructionofthegolfinggroundbythetrampingof
horsesandcarriages,andnoticestothateffectwere
displayedontheLinksandinlocalnewspapers.Troops
were,however,allowedtotrainthere,especiallyduring
thePeninsularWar,whenseveralvolunteerinfantry
battalionswereraisedinEdinburghandtrainedon
BruntsfieldLinks.
In1798,WalterScott,QuartermasteroftheRoyal
EdinburghLightDragoons,afterwardsthefamous
authorofthe"WaverleyNovels,"appliedtotheMagis-
tratesforthesamelibertyofoccasionallydrillingthe
EdinburghCorpsofCavalryaswasallowedtheother
VolunteerCorpsoftheCity.TheGolfingSocieties,
however,hadapproachedtheMagistratesindefenceof
theLinks,andtheapplicationwasrefused.Thethorny
