Magistrates,bothintheirofficialcapacityandintheir
moregenialmomentsofrecreationandenjoyment.
ManymembersoftheTownCouncilwerealsoassociated
withtheSocietyasoffice-bearersaswellashonorary
andplayingmembers.
Therigidprincipleofadherencetotherules,which
appearsfromtheminutesthroughouttheSociety'slong
existence,wasevidentin1773whentheCouncilfound
it.necessarytominutetheirviewthatthoughthe
petitionsforordinarymembershipofBailiesJohn
BrownofEdinburghandJohnMeggatofPortsburgh
"appearedunanimousfromthefaceofthecompany,
yetthatnohandlemightbemadeatanyfutureelection
foradmittingotherwisethanbytherules,aballotwas
ordered,andtheywereunanimouslyelected."
In1796,SirJamesStirling,previouslymentioned,
thenLordProvostofEdinburgh,andthefirstofalong
seriesofLordProvostsoftheCitytobemadeHonorary
MembersoftheSociety,alongwithDeanofGuild
NeilMacVicar(afterwardsLordProvost)andother
membersofthemagistracy,wereadmittedasHonorary
Members.
ThefirstHonoraryMemberoftheSocietyonrecord
wasBailieThomson,in178o,andtwoyearslaterappears
DeanofGuildCleghorn,onhisresignation,asheis
"tobenomoreagolfer."Hewasoneofthefirst
burgessestojointheranks(in1773),beingmentioned
