5zTHEROYALBURGESSGOLFINGSOCIETYOFEDINBURGH

manufacturedallhisownclubs,beingacleveramateur
carpenter)wontheGoldMedalin1874,1875,1888,
18go,and1891,andwasoneofthefinestexponentsof
Burgessgolfasascoreplayer.
Inthenineteenthcenturyitsometimeshappened
thatapplicantsformembershipwere"shakenin"by
thenewlyelectedCaptainontheirfirstapplication—a
formofintroductiontotheSocietywhichcarried
judicialweight—butthiswasaprivilegeonlyaccorded
on"theCaptain's"(orSpringCompetition)day,and
iftheapplicantdidnothappentobepresenthispetition
wasorderedtolieonthetablefortheusualtime.This
practice,whichwasanunwrittenlawandacceptedby
themembersas'anexclusiveprivilegeofthenew
Captainonhistakingthechairforthefirsttime,obtained
atleastuntil1876,whenfourapplicantswereadmitted
"inconformitywithanancientcustomoftheSociety
byshakinghandswiththenewlyelectedCaptain."
Probablythemostbrilliantandbestknowngolfer
thattheBurgessmaybesaidtohaveproducedduring
Bruntsfield,Musselburgh,andearlyBarntondays,was
A.MackenzieRoss,whodiedinApril1915.On
BruntsfieldLinks,whereheplayedasaboy,hisgame
gavepromiseofthatbrilliancyafterwardssowell
fulfilled,anditwasinconnectionwiththeBurgess
SocietyatMusselburghandBarntonthathisname
becameahouseholdwordingolfingcircles.Hewas
"shakenin"totheSocietybytheCaptainon1ith
April1877,andonthefollowingdayhebeganhis
meteoriccareerintheannalsoftheBurgessbywinning
theGoldMedal,itspremieraward.Fouryearslater
hehadreachedtheplus8markinhandicap.His
recordintheSociety'scompetitionsiswhollyunique.
Duringhisthirty-eightyears'membershiphewasGold
Medallistasoftenasthirteentimes,thelastoccasion
being19o8,whenhewasfifty-eightyearsofage.In
theAutumnGoldMedalcompetitionshewaseven
