Inthenineteenthcenturyitsometimeshappened
thatapplicantsformembershipwere"shakenin"by
thenewlyelectedCaptainontheirfirstapplication—a
formofintroductiontotheSocietywhichcarried
judicialweight—butthiswasaprivilegeonlyaccorded
on"theCaptain's"(orSpringCompetition)day,and
iftheapplicantdidnothappentobepresenthispetition
wasorderedtolieonthetablefortheusualtime.This
practice,whichwasanunwrittenlawandacceptedby
themembersas'anexclusiveprivilegeofthenew
Captainonhistakingthechairforthefirsttime,obtained
atleastuntil1876,whenfourapplicantswereadmitted
"inconformitywithanancientcustomoftheSociety
byshakinghandswiththenewlyelectedCaptain."
Probablythemostbrilliantandbestknowngolfer
thattheBurgessmaybesaidtohaveproducedduring
Bruntsfield,Musselburgh,andearlyBarntondays,was
A.MackenzieRoss,whodiedinApril1915.On
BruntsfieldLinks,whereheplayedasaboy,hisgame
gavepromiseofthatbrilliancyafterwardssowell
fulfilled,anditwasinconnectionwiththeBurgess
SocietyatMusselburghandBarntonthathisname
becameahouseholdwordingolfingcircles.Hewas
"shakenin"totheSocietybytheCaptainon1ith
April1877,andonthefollowingdayhebeganhis
meteoriccareerintheannalsoftheBurgessbywinning
theGoldMedal,itspremieraward.Fouryearslater
hehadreachedtheplus8markinhandicap.His
recordintheSociety'scompetitionsiswhollyunique.

Among the material from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are match programmes, club histories, and handbooks. From the late 20th century are promotional materials to encourage greater diversity in sport. Most items cover sports activities in Scotland.
