PROMINENTBURGESSPLAYERS
Tisdifficulttoestimatethegolfingprowessofthose
membersoftheBurgesswhoplayedoverBrunts-
fieldLinksduringthegreaterpartoftheeighteenth
andnineteenthcenturies.Thenumberandlengthof
theholesconstitutingaroundvariedconsiderably,
especiallyintheearlierperiod,andnaturallycannot
inanywaybecomparedtothepresentlyaccepted
schemeofthegame.NodoubttheSocietyhadits
specialmenofskillinthosedaysasithasnow,although
formanyyearsprizeballsformedtheonlyrecompense
ofgoodplay,apartfrompersonalsatisfaction,untilthe
adventofmorecostlytrophies.
OrlandoHart,firstknownCaptainoftheSociety,
mustbeconsideredoneofthebestplayersofhistime,
hisnamerepeatedlyappearingintheminutesasfirst
prize-winner.Mentionmustalsobemadeofsuch
playersasDanielKerr,CharlesRhind,CaptainJoseph
Williamson,JohnMeggat,andFrancisBraidwood,
whoviedwitheachotheraspremiumballwinners.
ButitisnotuntiltheadventofthepresentGoldMedal
in1816thatanyrealcomparisoncanbeplacedupon
individualmerit.ThefirstwinneroftheMedalwas
AndrewSpalding,whorepeatedhissuccessin182-8and
1832.JamesReidwontheMedalin1817,1819,and
1825,andmustalsohavebeenafront-rankerofhis
period.Wecanimaginethekeenstrugglesafew
yearslaterbetweensuchplayersasCaptainJohnRhind
andSecretaryJohnMartin,bothsplendidplayersofthe
oldschool.JohnRhindwontheMedalin1836,
followingupthatsuccessin1841and1842,andagain

Among the material from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are match programmes, club histories, and handbooks. From the late 20th century are promotional materials to encourage greater diversity in sport. Most items cover sports activities in Scotland. There are also publications relating to the Olympics and international matches. |
