COMPETITIONSANDHANDICAPS39onBruntsfieldLinkswithanactualscoreof61,"hishandicapoffivestrokesnotbeingrequired."Ini86zthefifty-oneefficientmemberswereclassifiedthus:istclass,scratch;zndclass,4strokes;3rdclass,8strokes;4thclass,izstrokes;5thclass,16strokes;and6thclass,zostrokes.Therewereeightplayersintheistclassatthatdate,tenintheznd,sixinthe3rd,eightinthe4th,sixinthe5th,andthirteeninthe6th.Thewinnersofprizesintheistclasswerepenalisedtwostrokes,andallothermemberswereraisedaclassforeachprizegainedduringtheyear.In1866thewinnerofaprizewaspenalisedfourstrokes,butistclassplayerswerenotsoweighted.ThescratchplayersoftheBurgessin1866wereDanielSmith,Dr.ArgyllRobertson,JamesandJohnWilliamson,andR.B.Shaw,andtherestofthemembersweredividedintosevenclasseswithz,4,6,8,'10,12,and16strokesrespectively.In1868thehandicapallowancefortheMusselburghgreenwasone-halfmorethanforBruntsfieldLinks.Priorto1876,thehandicaps,whichwerealwaysfixedbytheCouncil(unlessonoccasionswheretheCaptainarrangedthehandicapsforhisownprize),wereadjustedforthewholeyear,withspecialrevisionalsoforextraprizecompetitions;butinAprilof1876ahalf-yearlyrevisionwasinstituted.Inrecentyearshandicappinghasfollowedthegenerallinesofamoderngolfclub,andmembers'handicapsareassessedbyaspecialcommittee,whichtakesintoaccountcardsreturnedintheperiodicalstrokecom-petitions.Fromitsinceptionin183odownto1857theSilverMedalwasplayedforunderthesameconditions(scratch)asthosefortheGoldMedal.In1858,how-ever,itwasplayedforunderhandicapforthefirsttime,andwonby"prospectiveCaptain"OwenGough,withtheaidofanenormoushandicapof35,which,consideringhisfullscorewas87,seemsamorethan
