The earliest printed setting of this pretty melody 'which I have seen, is that published in Daniel Wright's Aria di Camera,
being a Choice Collection of Scotch, Irish and Welsh Airs for the Violin and German Flute : c. 1730. It is there designated
•' The Dangling of the Irish Beams." and although, as far as I know, not attributed to Carolan, it hears considerable resemblance
to the graceful compositions of our favourite bard. Thomas D'Arcy McGee was born in Carlingford, Co. Louth, in 1825 : in
his youth he was a strong member of the young Ireland party : a change in his political views, and his hostility towards the
Fenians caused him to be considered a traitor, and he was assassinated in the streets of Ottawa in 1868.
