• Tills old traditional melody dates probably from as far back as the earlier part of tlie 16tli century; it was used by the Eeformers
as a hymn tune. Oswald lias included it in his CaJcionian Pi'clcet Companion (commenced 1759), vol. iv. It originally consisted of one
strain only, the second being adapted from a v.ariation composed by McGibbon, and published in his Scots Timea, Bk. III., 1755, .as " \^^atson's
Scots' Measure." Burns wrote his song in 1784. It is a description of the incidents .attending his birth. Burns was born on the 2Qth of
January, 1759.
