PREFACE.
In the following Work, I have endea-
voured to examine the Performances
which constituted the First Edinburgh
Musical Festival. I have introduced this
examination by a few general remarks on
the present state of musical taste in Great
Britain, with a view of the objects which
gave rise to the project of a Musical Fes-
tival in this city ; a project so happily
conceived, and so successfully comple-
ted. A succinct statement of the pro*
ceedings by which the undertaking was
accomplished, forms the latter part of
