172 THE POCKET SONGSTEU ;
Her smiles are like the evening mild,
When feather'd pairs are courting,
And little lambkins wanton M'ild,
In playful bands disportii^g.
Were fortune, lovely Peggy's foe,
Such sweetness would relent her ;
As blooming spring unbends the brow
Of savage, surly winter.
Detraction's eye no arm can join
Her winning powers to lessen ;
And spiteful envy grins in vain
The poison'd tooth to fasten.
Ye powers of honour, love, and truth,
From every ill defend her ;
Inspire the highly-favour'd youth
The destinies intend her ;
Still fan the sweet connubial flame,
Responsive in each bosom ;
And bless the dear parental name,
With many a filial blossom. Burns.
O LASSIE, WILL YE TAK A MAN.
Tune — Whistle oer the lave ot,
O LASSIE, will ye tak a man,
Rich in housing, gear, and Ian',
De'il tak the. cash ! that Fsoud ban,
Nae mair I'll be the slave o't.
