26 THE POCKET SONGSTER;
The shepherd thus sung: " Tho' young Mary be fair,
Her beauty is dash'd with a scornful proud air ;
But Susie was handsome, and sweetly could sing.
Her breath like the breezes perfumed in the spring.
That Maddie, in all the gay bloom of her youth.
Like the moon was inconstant, and never spoke
truth ;
But Susie was faithful, good-humour'd; and §-ee,
And fair as the goddess who sprung/ from the sea,
^ J
That mamma's fine daughter, with^^ll her great
dower,
Was awkwardly airy, and frequently sour ;
Then, sighing, he wish'd, that would parents agree,
The witty sweet Susie his mistress might be."
Ramsay,
THE ADIEU.
Tune — The Yelloiu-haird Laddie.
Ah ! can I behold, love, that heart-rending sigh,
And the tear that bedims my dear Mary's fond eye ?
Can I kiss those sweet lips of the coral's bright hue ?
And speak the sad word, lovely Mary, Adieu !
Can I view that fair face, and that form so divine,
Whom once flattering hope whisper'd soon would be
mine ?
Can I press to my bosom that heart that's so true ?
And speak the sad word; lovely Mary, Adieu !
