xliv CHARTERS OF THE ABBEY OF INCHCOLM
made advisable his removal to Dunfermline, Patrick
Graham, the unfortunate Archbishop of St. Andrews, was
confined in the monastery.1
There is comparatively little in the existing records of
the Abbey to interest the student of economic history.
Inchcolm’s solitary contribution to the development of
industry would appear to have been the working of coal
in its lands of Bucklyvie, mentioned in a charter of 1533.2
The later records of the monastery supply instances of
‘ steelbow tenure ’; 3 and two charters of 1559 have some
significance as recording the protest by the Abbey’s tenants
of Donibristle, Barnhill and Grange to the Commendator
against ‘ rack-renting ’ and the subsequent adjustment of
their rents.4
