— Educated in France, and had just come home when
the ’45 broke out; taken at capture of Carlisle.
—S.P.D., 79-26. He pleaded guilty at his trial,
16th July 1746 ; was sentenced to death, but
reprieved. Kept in the house of a messenger
until he was transported.—Scots Mag., July 1746,

dyce, ii. 435 ; Baga, Ixix. 173.
— Wright. On 27th April 1746 he was arrested on
suspicion and put in the Tolbooth, which was full
of dead and wounded men. On 2nd May he was
put in a sloop and sent to Cromarty Road, where
he was released. On his return home he was
again arrested and incarcerated, and suffered
severe hardships. On 23rd April 1747 he was
released on bail of 1000 merks. ‘ The substance
of a long proof against him is that he was a wright
to the rebels which some say he did voluntarily,
others that he was forced. Likewise he was an
overseer of their tradesmen in Inverness . . .
and that he was in use to attend the non-jurant
Episcopal Meeting House. David Gordon heard
him wish well to the Pretender’s interest.’—

— ‘ Hireman to Duke of Perth.’ ‘ On suspicion.’
‘ Witnesses declared he was seen driving the
Rebels’ cannon wearing the white cockade.
After the battle of Falkirk was seen riding a
dragoon horse, armed with pistols, with a

52 Episcopal minister. In the evidence against Sir
James Stewart of Burray it was stated that arms
collected for the Prince’s army had been con¬
cealed in Mr. Taylor’s house. Shortly after
Culloden orders were sent to burn his ‘ meeting
house ’ and to arrest him as a ‘ non-juror.’ On
25th May he was arrested, along with Sir James
Stewart of Burray, and put in a ship and taken to
Kirkwall. Thence they were sent to London.
