Against his name is shown the words ‘ occasioned
M'Leod’s defeat,’ presumably referring to Lord
Lewis Gordon’s defeat of M‘Leod at the
‘ Skirmish of Inverurie ’ on 23rd Dec. 1745 when
he forced M‘Leod to cross the Spey, thus leaving
Aberdeen open for the Prince. On the drawing
of lots for the one man in twenty who should
stand his trial, Maver drew the fatal lot but
was not tried. He may have turned King’s
Evidence. He appealed to be discharged, and
