EXAMINATIONS OF PERSONS UNDER SPIRITUAL CONCERN II
One day hearing a Mint (12) on these words, Mark 16. And he said unto
them, Be not affrighted, Ye seek Jesus of [564/8] of Nazareth which was
crucified:20 I found so great satisfaction & so great joy & peace in believing,
that I could not forbear saying to some that sate beside me, Saw ye ever such
a Morning as this! But received no Answer.
I long’d much for a Sacrament-Occasion; and attended at the first of that
kind that offered, which was at Kilbride. On the Fast-day I had great comfort in
hearing the Sermons there, and found all the Promises mentioned to behevers,
applied to me in particular. I came to a Minr (26) to get a Token in order to
communicate, who after bade me look to it, that it was not to to be seen of
men & to get a name for Religion or for any other base selfish end: This gave
a great knell to my heart, so that I had almost cried out, because this was so far
from my heart me that I could appeal to the Lord that knew my heart, that it
was not for any such base Ends: I heard the Sermons on Saturday with much
pleasure, but was still longing to get to that holy Ordinance, yet afraid of a
rash approach, & I turn’d the more afraid, that the people about me seem’d
to be so dead: but that word, when the sweat was breaking upon me, my
fears were so great, came into my heart, tho not uttered by Minr speaking,
But yet with thee forgiveness is that fear’d thou mayest be,21 which gave me
more Encouragement to look forward to that Ordinance. On the Sabbath
at the Close of the Action Sermon, that word (tho not mentioned by the
Speaker) came into my mind, while I was sweating thro’ fear, Daughter be
of good cheer thy sins are forgiven thee,22 which have me much freedom to
go forward to the second Table, which, after retiring by my self for prayer,
I accordingly did.
[565/9] At the Table, I can say I sate under Christs shadow with great delight
& found his fruit sweet to my Taste: & after communicating retir’d by my
self for prayer: and had a very desirable time of it afterwards that Evening.
On the Munday hearing a Minr (26) on that text, Sing unto the Lord a new
song, for his right hand & his holy arm has won him the Victory,231 found
much sweetness & comfort at the thoughts that the Lord had won himself
the Victory in my heart, and I hopd also in the hearts of many others. After
that, I found much peace in my heart, and much love to Christ & to all that
mentioned the name of Christ in a right way.
In hearing Sermon at Camb. on Sabbath before the first Sacrament there
(July 1742) I fell under great fears while a Minr (26) discoursd of Self-
Examination from that Text, But let a man examine himself &c:24 but
these fears were scattered by that word, (tho not utter’d by the Speaker)
