EXAMINATIONS OF PERSONS UNDER SPIRITUAL CONCERN II

made useful for clearing up this matter, in some satisfying [341/—] measure
to me, particularly these relating Effectual Calling and Justification. Many
other Answers to Questions in the Larger Catechism, were made very Sweet
& very useful to my Soul, in these times & since especially these relating to
Christs Exaltation in his Resurrection Ascension & Sitting at the Right hand
of God and Intercession there: as that he arose again from the dead on the
third day, whereby he declard himself to be the Son of God, to have satisfied
Divine Justice, to have vanquished Death & him that had the power of it,
& to be Lord of Quick & Dead: & that he did all this as a Publick person
the Head of his Church &c: That he in our nature and as our Head, visibly
triumphing over Enemies, visibly went up into the Highest Heavens, there to
receive Gifts for men, to raise up our affections thither, & to prepare a Place
for us, where himself is & Shall continue &c: That as God-man he is advabced
to the highest favour with God the Father, with all fullness of joy, glory, &
power over all things &c: That he makes Intercession by his appearing in our
nature continually before the Father in Heaven, in the merit of his obedience
& sacrifice on Earth, & so on to the End of that Answer.
One Sabbath night after the rest of the Family were gone to bed, when I was
at Secret Prayer, the Lord was pleasd to give me much more Enlargement of
heart [ ],19 than I think ever I had been acquaint with before: and while I was
going on in Prayer, that word Hos. 2.19 was born on upon my Spirit, with a
strong & sweet Impression, I [342/-] willbetrothe thee unto me, I willbetrothe
thee unto me, yea I will betrothe thee unto me forever &c: which filled me
with love to Christ & joy in him, and admiration at his condescending grace
to such a Sinner & poor worm. But this frame was very soon interrupted &
removed by Satans being loose upon me, & permitted to attack me with his firy
darts, & to afflict my Soul with wicked Imaginations & hellish Suggestions:
I wishd if possible, that I might fall asleep, if so be I might by that means get
free of these wicked thoughts: accordingly I did fall asleep, but within a little
awaked in great horror, and under a terror that Satan would appear to me in
some bodily [ ]20 shape: and as I was essaying Prayer, that Word Eph. 6. came
into my mind with a heavenly Impression, Take unto you the whole Armour of
God,21 —and above all things take to you the Shield of faith whereby ye may be
able to quench all the firy darts of the wicked one :22 whereupon I was enabled
to See That it was indeed Satans firy darts that were giving me this trouble, &
was helped to very lively actings of faith in Christ as having overcome all the
Powers of darkness & foiled them all in his death on the Cross, & thereby also
purchased & secured Victory over them to his followers.
