From Henri Cleutin, Seigneur d’Oysel, to the
Queen Dowager
1553. Vol. iii. 74.
Having received the Queen’s letters of the 26th and 27th September
by the Abbot of Kilwinning’s man, he had them deciphered and showed
them to the Queen’s brothers. On the following morning he will show
them to the King, although he has already told the contents to him
at supper. He does not know how they will receive the news. They
are waiting anxiously for the return of the Protestant, after which he
will depart. Collaudy will not do as they arranged, and it will not be
possible to do as they wish unless the payments are made in Scotland.
It is not the first time that Collaudy has acted so. The writer has not
been able to obtain his salary, save only 600 ecm. Money is very scarce,
but the writer hopes to be able to obtain the Queen’s money and to do
as she desired him with it. The Queen of Scots is well. Written from
Villers-Cotterets on the 6th November.

Madame, ay ant receu les deulx lettres qu’il vous a pleu
m’escripre du xxvjme et xxvijme de septembre par Phomme
de 1’abbe de Kilooning,1 je les ay faict incontinent des-
chiffrer et translater le memoire et les ay icy apportez, et
des hier au soir que j’arrivay, je feiz voir le tout a Mes-
seigneurs voz freres et a ce matin le Roy en verra autant,
encorez que je communiquasse le contenu a sa Mageste
hier a son soupper. Je ne vous scauroys encores dire,
