LETTERS TO MARY OF LORRAINE
55
XL
From the Constable Montmorency to the Queen Dowager
1549. Vol. iii. 27.
By the King’s despatches she will see how they are treating her
neighbours, who, for long, have not had such trouble; since, by the loss
of the forts, Boulogne and all they have spent on it remains useless.
This attack was made more to divert attention from Scotland than for
any use the King expected of it. But he has been so successful that he
will regain what they held. And as through M. de Termes she will
learn how events have happened, and, by the letters of Captain Cannieux,
hear how her wishes are amply fulfilled, he will write no more. XVritten
from the camp near Ambleteuse on the 28th August 1549.
A LA ROYNE, LA ROYNE DOUAIRIERE d’ESCOSSE.

1 la perte de ces places. The loss of the forts was followed by a blockade of
the town of Boulogne, owing to the approaching winter. The peace, concluded
on the 24th March 1550, restored Boulogne to France on the condition of the
payment of 400,000 ileus. The Marquis de Mayenne was one of the hostages
for the fulfilment of the treaty.
