From M. de Lorges to the Queen Dowager
1548. Vol. iii. 54.
Although he knows that she is informed of all Court news, he writes
this note for remembrance and to beg the Queen to believe that he will
spare neither life nor goods in her service. The King is in good health,
as also the Dauphin and the little Queen her daughter: she is so
amiable and intelligent that all who see her are marvellously well-
contented with her ; which is a delightful thing to see.
The Court is taken up with festivities on the occasion of M. d’Aumale’s
marriage : he has married a very nice princess, who is most gracious
and shows that she comes of a good House. There has been a tourna¬
ment and there will be another next day which the King has arranged.

Madame, encores que je saiche bien que vous soyez
advertye bien amplement des nouvelles de ceste compaignie
si est ce que je vous ay bien voullu faire ce mot de lestre
pour souvenance et vous suplier, Madame, croyre tousiours
que la ou j’auray puissance de vous faire service que je
espargneray ma vye ny mes biens. Le Roy se porte tres
bien, graces a Dieu, aussi faict M. le Daulphin et la Royne
vostre fille, qui est, ainsi que je vous puis asseurer aultant
gentille et de bon escient que tous ceulx que la veoyent en
ont merveilleusement grant joye et contentement; vous
asseurant de rechef, Madame, que c’est la chose la plus
belle a veoir qu’il est possible. Madame, il ne se faict autre
chose pardeca pour le present que beaucop de triomphes
pour les nopces de M. vostre frere qui a espouse une tres
honneste princesse, qui a la grace aultant bonne que Ton
sauroit dire et qui monstre bien estre sortie de bonne
