From the Constable Montmorency to the Queen Dowager
1548. Vol. iii. 24.
After his other letter was written, M. d’Aumale and the writer have
hunted through all the purses in the place and have found another 5000
ecus, which he sends. The total is 15,000 ecus to last till the other money,
which he has mentioned, comes to hand. To this he can add no more,
so he will not prolong his letter. Written from Bordeaux on the 9th
November 1548.
A LA ROYNE, LA ROYNE DOUAIRIERE d’eSCOSSE.
Madame, oultre mon autre lettre et depuis qu’elle a este
escripte, M. d’Aumalle vostre frere et moy avons advise de
chercher par toutes les bourses qui sont icy; ou avons
trouve encores cinq mille escuz que je vous envoye. Qui
font quinze mille pour actandre les deniers dont mes autres
lettres font mention ; ausquelles je n’auray povoir riens
adjouster daventaige. Qui me gardera voz faire plus
longue lettre. Priant Dieu, Madame, vous donner tres
bonne et longue vye. De Bourdeaulx,2 le ixe jour de
Novembre 1548.

1 De Bourdeaulx. Montmorency and D’Aumale were both despatched from
Savoy to put down the rising due to the salt tax, which, starting in Angou-
mois, had spread to Bordeaux. See De Bouille, vol. i. pp. 194-6.
