1 Until the autumn of 1845 there stood about the centre of what is now the
Dean Cemetery ‘a large, venerable, old mansion-house, the seat of the now
extinct family of Nisbet of Dean, a family long of great local influence.’ The
village of Dean ‘ has always had a peculiar population of its own, quite distinct
from that both of Edinburgh and of the country’ (Cockburn’s Journal, 1874,
vol. ii. pp. 139, 140). It was doubtless a tiny village indeed in 1622, for only
seven of the contributors are entered as ‘in the Deane.’

Description | Over 180 volumes, published by the Scottish History Society, containing original sources on Scotland's history and people. With a wide range of subjects, the books collectively cover all periods from the 12th to 20th centuries, and reflect changing trends in Scottish history. Sources are accompanied by scholarly interpretation, references and bibliographies. Volumes are usually published annually, and more digitised volumes will be added as they become available. |
