the Council and has been succeeded by Professor W. Croft
Dickinson. The Council desire to express their apprecia¬
tion of the services of Professor Mackie in that capacity.
Members of Council who retire in rotation at this time
are Dr. H. W. Meikle, Dr. Annie I. Dunlop and Mr. H. M.
Paton. Dr. Angus has also expressed a wish to retire.
The Council feel that they cannot allow Dr. Angus’ resig¬
nation to take effect without placing on record their sense
of the valuable help he has given to the Society as Assistant
Secretary from 1920 to 1924, as Joint Secretary from 1924
to 1928 and again as a member of Council since 1940.
His unique knowledge of Scottish archives has always been
placed unreservedly at the service of the Society and of all
workers in the field of Scottish history. The Council
recommend the re-election of Dr. Meikle, Dr. Dunlop and
Mr. Paton, and the election of Professor Mackie in place
of Professor Dickinson. They also recommend the election
of Miss Henrietta Tayler and Mr. James Fergusson in
place of Dr. Angus and the late Dr. Dickson.
The Society has lost during the year 13 members by
death or resignation ; the names of 4 others, whose sub¬
scriptions were in arrear, have been removed from the list;
13 new members have joined. The total membership,
including 145 libraries, is now 407.
An Abstract of the Accounts for 1948-49, as audited, is
appended.
Professor W. Croft Dickinson, Chairman of the Council,
in moving the adoption of the Report and Accounts, paid
tribute to the work of his predecessor, Professor Mackie, and
also to the late Dr. W. K. Dickson and to Dr. W. Angus.
He pointed out that from the apparent balance of £408
the volume for the past year fell to be paid and appealed
