and Mixed with dry Peat Dross. When cool, Broke up supereour
to Coal for Generating Steam.]
The Tar after the Pitch was removed or seperated was found
very sutable as a Lubricator for Waggon Axiles and heavy Machen-
ery. [The Lubricative Grease had a percentage of Green oil mixed
with it But no water.] [When the Grease was in demand, The Tar
was mixed with Green oil which was unsaleable at the Refinery.] A
demand at a profitable price sprung up, orders increasing till the
Demand was equal to the supply. James McFaden and his associates
at the Refinery began to Experiment, made Mr Gaunter to beleive
that § by meashure of Water added to the Tar would improve the
Grease. He seing our hesitation to make this Mixture, and reminded
by him that he was Manager, Stood over the adding of the Water
to 3 Tons which was put in Casks. Sent to Glasgow to fulfill an
order. All returned by Steamer and no more asked for. [The 3
Tons of Grease Mixed with § Water under Mr Caunters Personal
superentendance Was ordered to be Carted to Steamer next day.
When it was descovered that the Tar and Water had partley
seperated and in a crudley state. When appealed to against sending
it in that State in Vain, He would have it off. With the result of its
return from Glasgow by return of Steamer and no more ordered.]
Soon after It was discovered by a ship Captain that the Peat Tar
was a superiour Antifouling Grease for Ships Bottoms. Samples
sent to several Shipping Ports. In due time Favourable testimonials
and orders for Antifouling Grease was received. A Liverpool Ship
Chandler, after lenghtned tests Wished to secure all that could be
Manufactured, offering a high prise for it. This was again so pro¬
mising to Get the Tar desposed of from Creed Works Profitably
without Chemicals or Chemical operation. However Macfadan
and associates began to Experiment, and Convinced Mr Gaunter
That by parcially distilling the Tar it Would improve the Anti¬
fouling Grease. [Pieces of Iron placed under water in the Broad
Bay. In a week took up to the Works Made Mr Gaunter beleive
the Iron lay Coated for 6 Month under water, covered with Tar
partly Distilled appeared clean from Fouling. Any Trick to prevent
the Tar being sold direct from Creed was the Sole Aim of The
Macfadens and associates.] This causing the Tar to be sent to the
