PANURGI PHILOCABALU [738-760
Amisit, fidamque animam cum sanguine fudit.
Qualis magnanimi soboles generosa leonis,
Quem pater accepto prius a venantibus ictu
Saucius, et longe semotis exul in arvis,
Lactantem obscuro jam forte reliquit in antro.
Postquam dura fames, atque impulit ardor edendi,
Tendit in arva furens, et justas surgit in iras,
Attollitque jubas, atque obvia quaeque feroci
Dente petit, lateque greges formidine sternit;
Utque indignantem venantum murmure turbam
Circumstare videt, contra truculentior ardet,
Rugitus ciet, et vasto fremit oris hiatu.
Ira referre pedem vetat, et speciosa pudendae
Haud dare terga fugae patitur Mavortia virtus.
Ore atque ungue minax, et nunc interritus hostes
In medios ruit, et venabula sanguine tingit.
Jamque adeo infestis concurrere cominus armis
Orbis in extreme dux ardet uterque recessu.
Nunc et in arma ruunt, multum indignantibus astris
Atque etiam imparibus properant decernere fatis,
Clari animis, darique armorum laudibus ambo,
Inter se totis obnixi viribus instant,
Quem Regem terris inferrent arma Britannis.
Thus the generous offspring of the great-souled Lion, left per¬
chance in dark cave while still a cub, his sire lying wounded by
hunters’ spear in far distant wilds, impelled by hunger, goes forth
raging to the fields, roused to fierceness. His mane bristling, he
attacks with savage tooth whatever opposes him, and scatters the
flocks in fear, far and wide; and when he discovers by their noise
the hostile crowd of hunters surrounding him, his ferocity in¬
creases, and with mighty roaring and grinding jaw, he challenges
them to the fight. His wrath forbids retreat, while his splendid
courage suffers him not for very shame to turn his back. With
fang and claw he threatens, and now undismayed he rushes into
the midst of his enemies, and stains the hunter’s spear with his
blood.
Now both Generals, in these remote regions, forthwith eagerly
prepare for the attack, and under opposing stars and unequal fates,
they hasten to the arbitrament of battle. Both, illustrious in
spirit and in deeds of arms, put out their whole strength as they
press forward to the decision as to who shall be the King to rule
