swifter course, and, taking them for wild beasts, surrounds their
lairs with nets, and wakes the echoes of the woods with the bay¬
ing of his hounds. Bursting forth like a storm, they seek the
heights of Ben Nevis, and Fergus, skilled in woodland craft, follows
with men and weapons, and various toils, and, at length, in the deep
valleys snares them, and the shades resound with their wails and
groans and horrid clamour.
But the illustrious Fergus, father and lord of the North, reduces
these lawless men to obedience, softens their savage hearts, com¬
pels them to dwell in houses, and by a long course of culture raises
up a civilisation. A better mode of life, the liberal arts and laws,
he teaches them, as also the art of war. They fit the arrow and
