Spelaea, et caecas nemorum petiere cavernas.
Ille instat contra cursuque ictuque lacessit,
Et saevas ratus esse feras indagine saltus
Circumdat, rapidisque quatit nemora alta molossis.
Illi turmatim variis assultibus urgent
Defessum, trepidique fugam meditantur inanem.
Precipiti demum sese effudere procella
Balnavi ad celsos magno cum murmure montes.
Insequiturque heros priscaeque hand immemor artis
Qua dumis agitare feras, silvisque solebat,
Speluncam ingentem glomeratis omnibus una
Excutit, et lato figens venabula ferro
Montivagum, positis bine atque cassibus, agmen
Egit in insidias tacita convalle locatas,
Implicuitque plagis laqueisque ingentibus, illi
Clamores tollunt horrendos, unde profundae.
Insonuere umbrae, crebrisque ululatibus ingens
Silva gemit, resonantque cavis e vallibus antra.
At Pater arctoae domitor clarissimus orae
Fergusus, victorque virum, Mavortius Heros,
Hos sine lege viros palantes montibus altis
Constituit, captosque domat, tectisque coercet,
Leniit effraenes et iniqui pectoris aestus,
Indomitosque animos, et corda ferocia mulcet,
Impiger, et longo docuit mansuescere cultu.
Instituitque modum vitae melioris, et artes
Tradidit ingenuas, legesque et foedera rerum
Edidit, et duri commercia saeva Gradivi,
Et lunare arcum, nervoque aptare sagittam
swifter course, and, taking them for wild beasts, surrounds their
lairs with nets, and wakes the echoes of the woods with the bay¬
ing of his hounds. Bursting forth like a storm, they seek the
heights of Ben Nevis, and Fergus, skilled in woodland craft, follows
with men and weapons, and various toils, and, at length, in the deep
valleys snares them, and the shades resound with their wails and
groans and horrid clamour.
But the illustrious Fergus, father and lord of the North, reduces
these lawless men to obedience, softens their savage hearts, com¬
pels them to dwell in houses, and by a long course of culture raises
up a civilisation. A better mode of life, the liberal arts and laws,
he teaches them, as also the art of war. They fit the arrow and
