523-547] SCOTI GRAMEIDOS LIB. I.
Gloriolae fumos, et inertem nominis umbram
Prendimus indecores. Pigroque sepulta veterno
Corda animosque metu resides, desuetaque bello
Brachia, et attonitas labefacto in pectore mentes
Gestamus, segnesque humili concussa pavore
Pectora, dum rebus Patriae Pater astat in arctis.
Nunc ubi gentis honos antiquae, invictaque bello
Dextera victrices quae fregerat ante cohortes
Romulidum, saevasque superbi Saxonis iras
Sustinuit, Danosque truces fera bella minantes
Perdomuit, turpique fuga dare terga coegit

while the Father of the country abides in adversity. Where now
is the honour of the ancient race, whose right hand, unconquered
in war, had before broken the cohorts of Rome, and stood firm
against the fierce anger of the proud Saxon, and conquered the
savage Dane, and oft compelled him to turn in base flight ?
Now our good ways, with our strength, have departed, and
already the Fates have put an end to Scottish triumph. Scotland
at length, pierced by her own sword, falls to the ground, not
knowing herself to be her own worst foe. Her strength, which once
repelled the enemy, is now used for her own destruction. Now
the son-in-law attacks his father-in-law with the sword, and the
child the parent, and the uncle is overthrown by the snares of his
