Dunkeld, much to the distaste of the fanatical party. The
following notice in Forbes’s Records touching the Estate of the
Kirk indicates the view taken by the party which he represents
of the line which the minister of Arbroath had adopted.
Forbes says : ‘ About the latter end of June 1606 the
King sent for some of the ministers to come to him against
the 15th day of September next following. The persons
sent for were these: Mr. Andrew Melvill, James Melvill,
James Balfour, William Scott, William Watson, John
Carmichell, Robert Wallace, Adam Colt, and Henry Philipe,
of the which the first eight were known to be of the
most learned, wise, faithful, and upright in the land, and
thus most opposite to all the wickedness of the bishops and
commissioners; the last being of another disposition was
purposlie (as it was thought) sent through the policie of Mr.
James Nicolson, to the end that, being in company with the
others, he might be acquainted with their mind, and give
intelligence thereof to the King, and to the bishops and com¬
missioners. But this policie being perceived, the danger was
prevented by the others refusing to have him in their com-
panie.’ Philp was member of the Assemblies of 1608, 1610,
1616, and 1618. In the last named, which promulgated the
Articles of Perth, he took a prominent part in support of the
Articles, as witnessed by the well-known letter of the Com¬
missioner, Lord Binning, to the King, dated £St. Johnstone,
27th August, at night, 1618.’ Lord Binning twice mentions
Henry Philp along with the two Archbishops and Dr.
Lindsay of Dundee, and commends the faithful and profitable
endeavours of these wise and learned men to the gracious
remembrance of his Majesty. There is no evidence of any
gracious remembrance on the part of the King of the wise
and learned pastor of Aberbrothock after this date, but
previous to it, on 20th January 1610, he was presented by
King James with the modified stipend, and he was placed in
the unenviable position of a member of the Court of High
