                                      WATERFALL AT DUNEIRA.

In the same valley, although more to the south-west, in which Monzie, the subject of the last plate, is
situated, and in a spot, equally retired and romantic, the Right Honourable Henry Dundas has built a plain,
but excellent, residence. The noble owner has evinced the most correct taste, from the appropriate use he
has made of the local peculiarities, in laying out and decorating the grounds. The house itself is embo-
somed in wood, both natural and planted, which covers the various eminences of the spot, through which,
as well as along the rude and romantic banks of the little river, is a variety of beautiful and wild walks.
Along these, at such spots as afford the finest or most singular views, are placed different sorts of rude
and fantastic sheds and seats, well adapted to the scenery.

Over this, as well as many other of the small mountain torrents of the Highlands, are thrown the
trembling Alpine bridges, formed of the trunks of trees, and placed from the projecting points of one rock
to the opposite one, while in the chasm below the waterfall keeps a continual roar. This is precisely the
case with the view here given, which can vie with the wildest Alpine scenery in romantic boldness and
picturesque effect.

The parish of Comrie, in which Duneira lies, has often been sensible to the shocks of earthquakes,
although they have never been sufficiently violent to do any mischief. The inhabitants were much
alarmed by one on the fifth of November 1789, about six in the evening, and others have been felt many
times since. There are also, at a short distance from Duneira, the remains of several druidical temples,
and also the remains of a Roman camp within the parish.—This view was taken in 1799.
