Extracts from private letters regarding
the great victory at Loos, and the death
of Captain Donald Graham, of the Black
Watch, on the 25th of September, 1915.
No. 1.
The 44th Brigade took three lines of German trenches,
then Loos, then Hill 70, in four hours — 6-30 to 10-30
a.m. — on Saturday, September 25th, and those four
Regiments have made an imperishable name for them-
selves. But at what a cruel cost ! In the attack the 9th
Black Watch lost nine officers killed and 1 1 wounded, only
Col. Lloyd and Major Stewart came through untouched —
truly by a miracle !
The killed are : Major Henderson, Capts. Bell, D. N.
Graham, and Harvey, Lieuts. J. Crighton, J. Henderson-
Hamilton, Cameron, Sharp, and J. Millars ; and the
wounded Capts. McLeod and Andrew, and Lieuts.
A. O. Dennistoun, E. R. Wilson, Glenny, Campbell,
R. Stirling, Scott-Pearse, Leslie, Wilson, and Dr. Bearne.
The other four (2nd Captains of each Company) by
some fortunate chance the General had ordered to be
left behind — Capts. Carmichael, Rusk, Norrie-Millar, and
