ing of the "Hermes," he was invalided out
of the Navy. When the Government issued
an appeal because of the shortage of Doctors,
Mowat at once responded. He joined the East
Anglian C.C. Station, was gazetted Major,
R.A.M.C., 7 May 1915, and was ordered to the
Dardanelles. On his way to take his share in
forming a Hospital at Mudros he lost his life in
the sinking of the transport " King Edward,"
which went down in the /Egean Sea, 13
August 1915.
FOWLIE, ALEXANDER JOHN : Private,
Australian Expeditionary Force ; son of

Whilst studying to
complete his B.Sc.
(Agr.), he received a
very good appointment
in a rubber plantation
in Galang Bazar, off
Sumatra. Finding the
German extraction of his superiors not to his
liking, , he went to Christmas Island and after-
wards to Australia, where he was farming when
war broke out.
Fowlie enlisted in the 13th Infantry Battalion
Australian Expeditionary Force in January 191 5.
After some months' training in Australia he
sailed with his Battalion for Egypt, and in
April 19 1 5 took his share in the landing at
Gallipoli. He served there for some months,
and was killed in action, 20 August 191 5.
AUCHINACHIE, GEORGE CAMERON :
Sergeant, 1st Battalion Gordon High-
landers ; son of Provost Auchinachie, Aber-
chirder ; born there, 16 June 1891 ; student in
Medicine, 1910-13.
At the outbreak of war Auchinachie was a
Lance-Corporal in the 1st Gordon Highlanders,
having enlisted as a Private in March 19 14. In
October 1914, he went to France and only a
fortnight later was wounded and invalided home.
He returned to France in April 19 15, and was
killed in action at St.
Eloi, near Ypres, 23
August 1915.
His Company Officer
wrote : " He was my
platoon Sergeant and I
cannot speak too highly
of his soldierly quali-
ties ". A friend who
served with him writes
thus : " The old quali-
ties that made him
friends in former days
— his shrewdness and
downrightness, his thoughtfulness for others, his
forgetfulness of himself, his audacity and his
incomparable courage and resource — all these
made him invaluable in the battlefield and in
the trenches ".
JAMIESON, HERBERT MATHER: Sur-
geon, R.N.V.R.; son of Peter Jamieson, Willow-
bank, Aberdeen ; born
Aberdeen, 25 March
1883 ; educated at the
Grammar School;
graduated M.B., 1904.
He was for a time in
practice in England and
served as Lieut. -Sur-
geon in the Volunteer
Forces in Newcastle-
on-Tyne. Later he
ment to sea as a Sur-
geon in the Mercantile
Marine.
When war broke out, Jamieson's ship was
taken over by the Admiralty for the transport
of Australian troops to Gallipoli. He was
wounded at the Dardanelles and invalided home.
On recovery he rejoined his ship and died at
sea, on Admiralty Service, 23 September 1915.
DIETERLEN, ROBERT ALFRED : Cor-
poral, 31 Bataillon de Chasseurs a pied,
Army of France ; son of the Rev. Hermann
Dieterlen of the French Mission, Hermon,
Basutoland ; born there, 30 August 1885 ;
