BEATON, Walter. No. 46682, Pte., Royal Scots ; born at Fort George, Scotland, Nov. 26th,
1878, residing for over 30 years in Forres ; joined at Edinburgh, 1917 ; served in France ;
killed taking a wood outside Carvin Village, France, 16th Oct., 1918. Son of Col.-Sergt. Walter
Beaton (deceased), Highland Light Infantry, and Jessie Macintyre or Beaton (deceased), of
Burdshaugh, Forres. Occupation, grocer.
BEAVIN, George. No. 202426, Pte., M.T., A.S.C. ; born at Wrotham, Kent, 17th March, 1876 ;
joined at Elgin, 9th August, 1916 ; served in Mesopotamia. Son of William (deceased) and
Mercy Beavin. Occupation, chauffeur.
BECKETT, Clifford Thomason. Capt. (Acting Major and for periods Acting Lt.-Col.), Royal
Field Artillery ; born at Southborough, Kent, Nov. 9th, 1891, residing in Morayshire for
several years ; joined in 1911 ; served in India with 3rd Lahore Division ; in Gallipoli at the
1st Landing with the 29th Division ; in France, 1915-1916 with 38th Welsh Division ; in
Salonica with 60th London Division ; in Palestine with 74th Yeomanry Division and 60th
London Division ; in France, 1918-1919 with 74th Yeomanry Division ; wounded in Gallipoli,
4th June, 1915 ; awarded Military Cross, Jerusalem, April nth, 1918. Son of Lt.-Col. W.
T. C. Beckett, D.S.O., V.D., R.E., and Mrs. W. T. C. Beckett, Umaria, Grantown-on-Spey,
Morayshire. Occupation, regular soldier.
BECKETT, Walter Napier Thomason. Lieut., Royal Navy ; born at Bilaspur, Central Pro-
vinces, India, residing at Grantown-on-Spey since 1906 ; joined at R.N. College, Osborne,
Isle of Wight, Jan., 1906 ; served at R.N. College, Osborne and R.N. College, Dartmouth, and
on H.M.S. " Cornwall," " Commonwealth," " Hindustan," " Larne," " Bristol," " Queen,"
" Venerable," " Dryad," " Ostrich," " Princess Royal," "Racehorse," "Legion," and Coastal
Motor Boats 4, 14, 20, 36, and 80 ; served with Home Fleet in Mediterranean and Atlantic ;
awarded D.S.O. for action at Zeebrugge, April 7th, 1917. Son of William Thomas Clifford
Beckett, Lieut.-Col., D.S.O., and Bessie Drummond Beckett, Umaria, Grantown-on-Spey.
Occupation, naval officer.
BECKETT, William Thomas Clifford. Lt.-Col., Royal Engineers; born at Mussoorie, India,
August 29th, 1882 ; looked on Grantown-on-Spey as home, wife being born in Strathspey ;
joined at Liverpool, August 20th, 1915 ; commander " S " Div. Special Constabulary, London,
and War Office Censor from August, 1914 until August 20th, 1915, when gazetted to command
1 2th Loyal North Lancashire Regt. (" Pioneers "), formed and trained battalion and took
it overseas May, 1916, with 60th Div., France, 1917 to Salonica and to Palestine, March, 1918,
Battn. ordered to France with 74th Div., July 23rd gazetted to Reserve, Jan., 1919 transferred
to Royal Engineers as Lieut.-Col. and ordered to Russia ; awarded D.S.O. and four
times mentioned in Despatches. Son of Col. W. H. Beckett, Indian Staff Corps (retired), of
Cheltenham, and Sarah Philadelphia Beckett. Occupation, consulting engineer.
BEE, Allan Gordon. Surgeon, R.N. ; born at Bangor, N.W., 29th January, 1890, residing in
Morayshire since 1906 ; joined at Edinburgh, 28th August, 1914 ; served with T.B.D.s " Gar-
land," " Nonesuch," " Llewellyn," H.M.S. " Kildonan Castle " and " Hyacinth ; served at
Scapa Flow, Russia, Channel and Africa, with Grand Fleet, Northern Patrol and Dover Patrol ;
awarded Russian Order of St. Stanislas, 3rd Class, with swords, " for distinguished service in
the Battle of Jutland." Son of John H. Bee, Esmond, Elgin. Occupation, medical student.
BEECH, Alexander. No. 18421, Gnr., R.F.A. ; born at Nairn, May 1st, 1887, residing in
Morayshire since 1916 ; joined at Lochgelly, Fife, 5th Sept., 1914 served in France ; gassed
and wounded. Son of James Beech (deceased) and Isabella Fletcher or Beech, 236, High
Street, Elgin. Occupation, miner.
BEGG, Alexander. No. 15707, Pte., i/6th Seaforths ; born at Elgin, 18th March, 1898 ; joined
at Elgin, 7th July, 1915 ; served in France ; wounded and taken prisoner of war ; died in War
Hospital, Stargard Pom, Germany, 20th July, 1918 ; awarded Military Medal. Son of A. and
Catherine Begg, Tarras, Forres. Occupation, farm servant.
