landers ; transferred in 1916 to 4th Northumberland Fus., in command of 72nd Divisional
Cyclist Coy., 1917-18, now attached 18th Welsh Regt. ; served in France ; awarded 1914-15
Star. Son of John Asher (deceased), Forres, and Williamina Murray or Asher (deceased).

ASHER, John Alexander. 2nd Engineer on H.M.C.S. " Malaspine," Pacific Coast Defence, and
Mine Sweeping (B.C.), at present engineer on Auxiliary Sch. " Margaret Hamy," plying between
Bombay and Basra ; born at Forres, 15th March, 1889 ; joined at Vancouver, B.C., before
war broke out. Son of John Asher (deceased), Forres, and Williamina Murray or Asher.

1892 ; joined at Glasgow, 4th August, 1914, 5th Scottish Rifles ; served in France ; wounded
9th April, 1917, at Arras, and on 12th April, 1918, at Robecq, losing right leg and shattered
right scapula ; was prisoner of war in Germany ; awarded 1914-15 Star. Son of John Asher
(deceased), 1, St. Leonard's Road, Forres, and Williamina Murray or Asher. Occupation
accountant.
ASTELL, Godfrey. Colonel, King's Royal Rifles ; born in India, August, 1849, living at Moy
House, Forres ; joined at Winchester ; commanded at Depot, Winchester, for 3 years during
the war ; served in India, Burmah, and Africa. Son of Henry Astell, Old House, Ichwell,
Bedfordshire. Occupation, retired colonel.
