During the period of 8th/10th August, 1918. Near Havgard whilst
collecting wounded, worked continuously day and night and displayed
exceptional courage and resource in directing horsed ambulances searching
for wounded. He was undoubtedly responsible for saving many lives.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer was in charge
of the evacuation of the forward area, and showed great initiative in
establishing dressing stations and collecting posts directly in rear of the
advancing infantry. He kept in touch with the battalion and succeeded
in evacuating the casualties almost as soon as they occurred, in spite of
heavy machine gun and shell fire.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. While preparing an
advanced dressing station in a village, it was subjected to an intense
bombardment, but he remained at his post dressing the wounded and
refused to take underground cover.

For gallantry and devotion to duty in attending wounded under very heavy
shell fire. Though blown up and badly shaken he continued his work
which at all times has been splendid.
M' Donald, Captain (now T. /Major) Ronald Hugh. Gaz. 17/7/17.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. One of our aeroplanes
was shot down, the observer was wounded and pinned beneath the wreck.
This officer and a bearer went out in full view of the enemy who were
shelling the machine, and extricated the man and removed him to safety.
He himself was severely wounded while doing so.
