MacDonald, 2nd Lieutenant William Francis. Special Reserve. Gaz. 23/11/17.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his Lewis Gun
N.C.O. was hit, he worked the gun himself, in spite of a smashed thumb,
remaining at his post until dark. Throughout the day he sent in excellent
reports, and maintained the line which would otherwise have fallen back.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has rendered
valuable services since the commencement of the campaign, and has
always shown the greatest courage, coolness, and initiative.
MacDonald, 200293 Sergeant D. (Dingwall). Gaz. 3/9/18.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As a sniper and ob-
server this non-commissioned officer performed valuable work under fire,
when his coolness and devotion to duty were conspicuous. Through the
information he afforded, timely dispositions were made to repel strong
enemy attacks on our flanks, during which he inflicted heavy losses on the
enemy machine guns and advancing infantry.
Macdonald, S/43856 Private (L. /Corporal) D. 2i\d Battalion. (Glasgow). Gaz.

During the attack at Presnau on 2nd November, 1918, he rushed a hedge
from which the enemy were firing and forced four men to surrender.
Later he noticed enemy firing from a house. Firing his Lewis gun from the
hip he rushed forward to the door of the house, killing several as they tried
to escape and taking four prisoners. He did splendid work.

For conspicuous gallantry during the operations extending over a period
from the 23rd August to 3rd September, 1918. His fearless manner has
always been a splendid example to his men throughout his long service
with the battalion.

During the operations at Lieu St. Amand on the 13th October, 1918,
although wounded, he continued to advance with his company through
very heavy fire, and was the first man to reach the objective. By collect-
ing the men in his vicinity and leading them on, the whole company was
enabled to reach its objective.
