For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great
courage and determination in leading an attack against the enemy
position across a zone swept by machine gun fire. The capture of the
position was largely due to his skill and initiative.

For conspicuous gallantry and fine leadership during an attack. He led
his company forward with the greatest dash, and although three times
driven back by intense machine gun and rifle fire, which held up the
advance on his right, he finally gained all his objectives. His courage,
determination and initiative greatly inspired his men.
