When he was at Edinburgh University, Stevenson wrote this account of a somewhat riotous end-of-term class excursion in 1871.
'The Session being now at an end ... we held a grand meeting in the class room after the last lecture, where cigarettes and pipes were smoked ... It was four o'clock before we separated, and after this many consecutive hours of rum-punch.'
