ÌN the year 1767, the Society in Scotland for.
propag ating Christian Knowledge publifhed
aTranflation of the NEW TESTAMENT into the
Gaelic Language, and diftributed a number of
copies in the Highlands and Weftern Ifles. By the ge-
nerofity of the Public, they hope foon to be enabled to
defray the expence of tranflating and printing the OLD
TESTAMENT ; by which nieans, that numerous clafs
of our countrymen^ who underftand no other language
than Gaelic^ wilL be furnifhed with the whole Sacred
Writings. The Tranflation is to be printed in Four
Parts, or Numbers. The Firft, which contains the Pen-
tateuch, or Five Books of Moses, is now finifhed;
and the other three Parts wilì be compieted with all the
expedition of which the nature of fuch an undertaking
can admit.
The Tranflator has endeavoured to preferve the lite-
ral meaning and arrangement of the words in the He-
brew Text. In the original, fome words not unfrequent-
ìy occur, which may be diiferently interpreted. In cafes
of this kind, the Iranflator has adopted what appeared
to him to be the moft proper fignification. He has, how-
ever, in many inftances, given the other meanings at the
bottom of the page. He has fometimes been obliged to
ufe words which may not be known in every ciiftricì of
the Highlands. To remedy this inconvenience, he has
likewife fubjoined, in notes, other words which convey
nearly the fame meaning : But as thefe explanatory, or
fynonymous words could not be always repeated, an al-
phabetical lift of them, together with the correfponding
Englifh words, is printed at the end of the prefent
volume.
