James Allan, Aberdeen ; Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, Bart. ;
Mr. John Gumming, Fintray ; Mr. George Auldjo Jamieson,
Edinburgh ; Mr. W. H. Lumsden of Balmedie ; Mr. Gharles
McHardy, Aberdeen ; Mr. William Mitchell, Aberdeen ; Mr.
George Russell, Wandsworth ; and Mr. A. R. Turnbull, Banchory.
Since the first appointment of Committees in 1886, the
Editorial Gommittee has lost by death Mr. Gharles Elphinstone
Dalrymple, Dr. George Grub, Dr. William Alexander and
Rev. Dr. Woodward ; while the Business Gommittee has lost
Mr. Patrick H. Ghalmers, the original Honorary Treasurer, Dr.
John Webster, Dr. Francis Edmond and Dr. G. B. Davidson.
The impossibility of adequately filling up the convenership left
vacant by Sir William Geddes' death leads the Gouncil to re-
commend that the functions of the separate Editorial and Business
Committees should be combined, and that the general manage-
ment of the affairs of the Glub should be entrusted to a single
body to be styled the Executive Gommittee of the Gouncil.
At the last General Meeting of the Glub, held on Wednesday,
27th December, 1899, it was agreed, on the motion of Professor
Dove Wilson, seconded by the Rev. James Smith, B.D., "That
the New Spalding Glub represent to the authorities charged
with the revision and completion of the Ordnance Survey that
every effort should be made to preserve a record of old place
names, and of the old boundaries of parishes, towns and counties ;
and the Glub would in particular direct attention to the fact
that in many cases where small estates and houses have dis-
appeared, the names survive as names of fields, or of natural
features ". After some correspondence on the subject with Sir
John Farquharson of Gorrachree, formerly Director-General
of the Ordnance Survey, and a member of the Glub, who
courteously placed the results of his experience at the service of
the Gouncil, a representation to the above effect was forwarded
to Golonel Duncan A. Johnston, the present Director-General.
