was collected ; and it consisted of such materials as might be expected from the
total destruction of the original archives and muniments of the See. The Liber
Decani, c which is placed first in the collection, and which is the only part that seems
to have been completed as an entire record previously, was the peculiar register of the
Dean and Chapter, and is distinguished from the other sections, by recording at
great length the foundation and constitutions of the Chapter, and the progressive
increase of the canonries and prebends of the Cathedral. It commences with a
solernn invocation suited to the beginning of some great work, d and originally con-
cluded with a thanksgiving in the same strain. e The Index of its contents, " rubrice
" cartarum in hoc lib/o," has been misplaced in arranging the collection. f
The next part, in order of binding, is what is here printed first, and appears to
have been a record formed for the Bishop's use. It wants the long and very curious
and important canons and constitutions of the church ; but contains a greater number
ofcharters conferring or explaining Episcopal privileges and property. Manyof the
entries in these two registers are naturally copies of the same originals ; and where-
ever a charter occurs in the latter only, a note is to be found on the margin, in a
hand not later than 1400, " ijla non fcribitur in libro Decani." B
These two portions of the record, written by different hands, may be ascribed
nearly to the same period ; and, with the exception of a sheet interrjolated in the
former, h and blanks in both filled with entries of a somewhat later date, seem to
have been written in the latter half of the thirteenth century. From various indica-
tions, it is certain that neither has been copied from the other, nor both from any
common transcript of earlier date. There is no reason, in short, to doubt that they
are both transcribed immediately from the original deeds.
The Papal commission, which has been quoted, directed the commissioner's search,
after the muniments of the Bishop and the Dean and Chapter, to the evidences of
the Priories of Urquhart and Pluscardin. None of these, however, have been col-
lected in the Chartulary, with the exception of an ancient charter in favour of
Urquhart, ' which is twice engrossed, but so unsatisfactorily, that it has been
thought allowable to print it from a collation of these copies with another transcript
occurring in the Chartulary of Dunfermline.
