Colin Campbell was son of John Macliver, a native of Mull, and
for many years an operative cabinet-maker in Glasgow. His
mother was daughter of a member of the clan Campbell, who
owned a small estate in the island of Islay. Her brother, an officer
in the army, attracted the notice of the Duke of York. On the
early death of his sister, Mrs. Macliver, he undertook the education
of his nephew, and sent him to the military academy at Gosport.
The youth took his uncle's family name, and as Colin Campbell
was gazetted ensign in the 9th Eegiment of Foot on the 26th May,
1808 ; he was present at the battle of Vimiero, on the 21st August
of the same year. He was with his regiment in the Corunna
campaign and in the expedition to Walcheren. Eetui'ning to
Spain in 1810, he was present at most of the great actions, till the
conclusion of the war. He took part in the expedition for relieving
Tarragona, and in the affair for relieving the posts in the valley
of Malaga. He was present at the battles of Osma and A^ittoria,
and led the column of attack at the siege of San Sebastian and at
the passage of Bidassoa. In 1813 he became captain, and in the
following year was transferred to the 60th Eifles. In the American
War he was present at the battles of Bladensburg and New Orleans.
In 1823 he aided in subjugating the slave insurrection in Demerara.
Lieut.-Colonel Campbell went to China in 1842 in command of
the 98th Eegiment; he took an active part at the taking of
Chin-kiang-foo, and the operations at Nankin. His next destina-
tion was India, where he commanded the third division under
